Why Your Indoor AC Fan Runs Constantly (But the Outside Unit Won’t Turn On)

If your AC fan inside is running nonstop but the outdoor unit refuses to kick on, you’re not alone—this is one of the most common cooling issues we see here in Platte City and the North KC area. The good news? This problem usually has a few clear causes, and catching it early can save you from bigger (and more expensive) repairs.
What It Means When the Indoor Fan Runs Continuously
Your HVAC system is made up of two main parts: the indoor air handler/furnace and the outdoor condenser. When everything is working right, both units run together. If your indoor fan is blowing constantly but you’re not getting cool air, something is preventing the outdoor unit from starting.
Common Signs & Causes to Watch For
1. The Thermostat Is on “Fan” Mode Instead of “Auto”
This is the easiest fix. If the thermostat fan setting is switched to Fan, it will blow air nonstop—whether or not your AC is cooling. Switch it to Auto
and see if the outdoor unit turns on.
2. A Tripped Breaker at the Outdoor Condenser
If the breaker feeding the outside unit trips, the indoor fan will still blow, but the system can’t cool. Check your electrical panel for a labeled AC breaker. If it’s tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, that’s a sign of a bigger electrical issue.
3. A Bad Capacitor in the Outside Unit
The capacitor is what gives your AC the “boost” to start up. When it fails, the outside unit won’t turn on—sometimes you’ll hear a humming sound, sometimes nothing at all. This is a very common summertime repair.
4. A Failed Contactor
The contactor is a small switch inside the outdoor unit that sends power to the compressor and fan motor. If it sticks or burns out, the unit won’t run. This part is inexpensive but requires a technician to replace.
5. Low Refrigerant or a Refrigerant Leak
If refrigerant is too low, the outdoor unit may short-cycle or refuse to run to protect itself. You might notice warm air blowing inside, frost on the refrigerant lines, or hissing sounds from the unit.
6. A Clogged Air Filter or Airflow Issue
Surprisingly, restricted airflow inside can cause the system to behave strangely. If the fan is blowing but the outside unit isn’t cooling, check the air filter—if it’s dirty, replace it and try again.
7. Faulty Thermostat Wiring or a Control Board Issue
If the signal isn’t reaching your outdoor unit, it simply won’t start. Wiring issues or problems with the furnace control board can cause this mismatch between the indoor and outdoor components.
